The Ink Blotter

tBlog gone and missing -- maybe forever but maybe not. Here is some advice/help to cope during these trying times.

Type in your tblog url in the address bar as usual.

http:// your blog name (dot) tblog (dot) com

Click on "View cached copy of page from Google".
You can change the archive date in the url to get to another month's page.

You will see your site (text only),
1. Click open File and "save page as", they will be saved as Mhtml files.
OR
2. You just need to copy and paste each post or article to a new blog either as you are viewing or from the saved page.
Depending on the blog service you choose, you can date and time stamp your posts as they were on tblog.

You do lose all your comments.

You can check the WayBack Internet Archives using your URL also.
It does take 6 months for newer posts to show in some cases but older posts should show up.
I did notice that none of 2008 is on my WayBack page, so either they are behind OR there was some sort of cut off.

For images uploaded into your tBlog account:
Go to Google Images
Type in your blog --  "blog name.tblog.com"
Your images should come up HOWEVER, you cannot save them -- you have to go to the WayBack machine and see
if you can retrieve the full size posted from there.
There should be no problem if your images are hosted off tBlog at a reliable site.

Recommendation
If you enjoyed the community at tBlog --
http://www.thoughts.com is a similiar community site (free with photo albums, message boards, and other perks, some ads).
Templates are set there and there is not as much customizing as with tBlog.  Also -- not as search engine friendly like tBlog and Shoupost.

Search Engine friendly and reliable blogs:
Wordpress
- limitations on templates, fabulous stats, files, photos, discreet ads, no javascripting. No Ad-Sense.
Blogger - customize through codes, private or public, need third party apps for stats and photos, no ads. Ad-sense friendly.
Blogger does offer a migration tool you could use with ShoutPost.
(to late for tblog).
LiveJournal - limited customizing on free accounts but many templates. Ads on header and footer. Photo albums.
Vox - community based blog, can customize, photo albums and lists.

A couple of others:
Blogdrive
- lots of templates, some discreet ads, some code customizing.
MSN Live Spaces - comes with albums and files, shoddy stats unless you get a third party.

Please note that Shoutpost may be axed next considering it has the same issues as tBlog -- mostly spam. The domain name is set to expire October 24, 2009. (tBlog had a six year fixed domain - April 12, 2003-April 12, 2009.)

Update: tBlog renewed the domain till 2010.
Shoutpost down and out 9/10/09.

Another resource:Website Downloader -- a free site ripper program that you use to download an entire site into a file.
Install --> Run --> File --> New Project--> Create a Directory ---> Create a file --> Name your Project --> Drop down menu change to "only the site" --> enter your blog URL --> click start
--> Click OK (make sure that the only window open is that of the download program menu) --> Click Project --> Click start.

When done -- you should have all your site in one file that you can click open and view.  Save that file to a disc, just in case your computer crashes.
OR

Upload the file online to MSN SkyDive or FileDen (You will need to get account at either place.)  Google Documents also but make sure you can upload the extension you saved the file with.

Another free software site ripper program is httrack -- this will spider your site and save all files into a set file you create on your computer.

If you move and would like to see where everyone else went -- email me your new URL and I will send out an email to all notifying them of your new home.  Please include your tblog user name

To shut down your tBlog -- there is no auto delete button for you in your controls - read the step by step shut down tutorial here.
